Jointly-Sponsored Programs



The Arabic Language Institute in Fez (ALIF) has established several jointly-sponsored programs with various universities and organizations. These programs have specialized curricula designed to meet the specific needs of the partner institution. While most of these programs involve instruction in Arabic, they also include other cultural and academic components not normally encompassed by ALIF’s regular programs. Details on each of ALIF’s current jointly-sponsored programs are listed below.

ALIF/University of Florida Summer Study Abroad
This is a six-week summer intensive course in Modern Standard Arabic. It is open to beginning, intermediate, and advanced Arabic students, all of whom receive university credit from the University of Florida-Gainesville. (Students not currently enrolled at the University of Florida are welcome to apply to the program.)

ALIF/ Dartmouth College Foreign Study Program
This is a twelve-week program with a minimum of eight students. All students are enrolled in three courses: 1.  "Arabic as a Cultural System" (Colloquial Moroccan Arabic); 2. A course on the city of Fez, "Discovering an Islamic City" , taught by an ALIF professor; and 3. A course taught by a visiting Dartmouth professor. This last course varies every year, depending on the specialization of the visiting professor: "Religion, Reason, and Reform in Morocco", "History, Politics and the Moroccan Novel", and "The Islam of Morocco", for example.   Students receive university credit from Dartmouth College. ALIF/ University of Leeds Year Abroad Program

This is an entire academic year of intensive Arabic for twelve undergraduate students from the University of Leeds, England. All students have completed one year of Modern Standard Arabic. Students study both Colloquial Moroccan Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic. They also have course components on translation, media, etc., and complete an extensive research paper in Arabic under the supervision of their ALIF supervisor. All students receive one year of university credit. (Students not currently enrolled at Leeds University may apply to the program).

ALIF/Virginia Military Institute Summer Abroad Program

Earn up to nine credit hours in Arabic or French, and the "History and Culture of Morocco". Although subject to change, excursions traditionally include visits to the Imperial City of Meknes, Roman ruins at Volubilis, the Holy City of Moulay Idriss, museums in Meknes and Fez, Islamic "Medersas", mountain Berber villages of Ifrane, Azrou, and Sefrou, as well as the Sahara desert at Merzouga.

This is a year-round twelve-week program offering 13 to 16 credit hoursArabic Language and Culture in Morocco covers a range of topics, including Arabic language, Literature, and Women's Studies. ALIF/ Fulbright Language and Cultural Orientation Program
This program is offered to all incoming American Fulbright scholars. Before beginning their year of research in Morocco, fellows spend five weeks studying Colloquial Moroccan Arabic and attending lectures on various aspects of Moroccan culture.

ALIF/Beloit College Program

Cross-Cultural Psychology Program:  This program is designed for students interested in the study of psychology in diverse cultural settings abroad. Participants are immersed for two periods of seven weeks each in two distinct societies, Estonian and Moroccan, with sharply contrasting ethnic, religious, linguistic and geographical characteristics. Rooted in the context of language and culture in their respective settings, students examine the universal and culture-specific components of psychological phenomena.

The program is offered every second year, in the fall semester. The U.S. faculty leader in the fall 2010 is Larry White, Professor of Psychology at Beloit College.

ALIF/Wake Forest University Program

This six-week summer program concentrates on Arabic language study and an area studies course. Students receive 3 hours of Wake Forest credit for the area studies course and 6 hours of transfer credit for the intensive language course. ALIF/DePaul University Summer Program

This six-week summer program offers an intensive language program for students interested in learning Arabic at the cultural and geographical connection point between two continents. Students partake in intensive language study in the centuries-old city of Fez, Morocco.  The program begins with some pre-trip course meetings during Spring Quarter for a course on Moroccan society and culture taught by a DePaul faculty member.

ALIF/St. Olaf College Program

This program, Term in the Middle East, is based in Turkey, Morocco, and Egypt, providing students with opportunities to experience the rich cultural achievements of the Turkish, Arab, Christian, and Muslim peoples.  In Fez students study Colloquial Moroccan Arabic, and take two content courses, Social Change in Moroccan Society and another taught by the visiting St. Olaf professor.  
St. Olaf offers a second month-long course in January, French Language and Moroccan Culture in Fes. Students participate in an immersion experience that includes home stays with local, French-speaking families.  The course focuses on Moroccan culture yesterday and today, emphasizing the multicultural aspects of Morocco.

ALIF/AHA International Program

This six-week summer program offers an intensive language program for students interested in learning Arabic in an exciting and natural setting.  They are able to examine Moroccan culture through a focus on language and interpersonal interaction by living with a Moroccan family and studying modern Arabic language with local Moroccan professors, in addition to taking a course offered in English by a faculty member from a U.S. university.

ALIF/Eastern Mennonite University Program

In this four-week program that takes place twice a year (Fall 2 and Spring 2) students acquire basic communication skills in colloquial Moroccan Arabic and participate in experiential seminars on Islamic Art and Architecture, Islam in Morocco, gender roles, Amazigh (Berber) culture, as well as dancing, cooking, and calligraphy lessons.  The program is enriched by trips to the imperial city of Meknes, Roman ruins at Volubilis, the blue medina of Chefchaouen, and an extended stay at a Berber oasis in the Sahara desert reached by camel.
